CA decertifies electronic voting machines!

Wow! She did it. Calif. Secretary of State Debra Bowen did exactly what a bunch of dedicated activists elected her to do. Summary below but details at http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_vsr.htm:
  • She reviewed all the voting systems used in the state that were submitted for review.

  • She decertified all systems from the one vendor who refused to turn over their code for examination - ES&S, owners of Los Angeles County's popular, but of unknown veracity, InkaVote system.

  • She decertified Diebold, Hart Intercivic, and Sequoia DRES (including at least some optical scan systems).

  • Only ONE Diebold AccuVote-TSx system is allowed per precinct, to aid the disabled.

  • "User jurisdictions are required to conduct a 100% manual count audit of the electronic results tabulated on each DRE machine in use on Election Day." (That's from the conditional recertification requirements for Diebold.)
Look for hundreds of news stories on this tomorrow. This is the biggest news re our vote in the nation right now. Huge. And Debra Bowen deserves THUNDEROUS applause and support for taking such a brave action on behalf of the people, against all the moneyed private interests that are desperate to control our elections.

Wow. In this day of never any good news, no public official doing anything to cheer about, this is indeed laudatory.
(Let's see if it DOES make the news).

What a relief... Maybe other states will catch on that the neocons are stealing elections... one of the primary symptoms of a coming fascism. Thanks for the update.

Thanks, Carl. The credit goes to a lot of election activists in CA who made getting the right person into the Secretary of State's office a priority, and then followed up with pressure for her to do the right thing - not that, in her case, it was needed. I met Bowen a couple of years ago at a Democratic convention in Los Angeles. I put a DVD in her hands of an election event that included myself, Bev Harris, Bob Fitrakis, and many others of note. She graciously took the disk but said she had already been following the issue and was concerned. I spoke to her at a couple other events later and it was clear she'd been doing her homework. Now we really need to watch her back because I think some companies and/or counties are going to sue her office and waste more taxpayer money trying to get this overturned. So the battle is merely waged at this point. Too soon to declare victory. But it's the right battle at the right time.

Is there any such effort in Kansas? Can you push for one???

Lisa, thanks for reporting this. I hadn't heard. Speaking if which, did the local propaganda organs report on this? I have little faith they will considering not a peep was mentioned about Chertoff's prediction 2 weeks ago about simultaneous LA/SF dirty bomb attacks at his speech at USC.

Not to mention our very own LA Weekly having a Rupert Murdoch muppet write that hit piece about Jeremt lake and Thresa Duncan. Alex Constantine has the goods btw...
